Sports and Me

“I don't know anything that builds the will to win better than competitive sports.”

-Richard M. Nixon quotes (American 37th US President )

We keep hearing such things about sports and there could not be any denial to this obvious fact that sports do play a very important part in our lives. Frankly speaking, I sometimes feel envious when I see my friends and known out there in fields playing various games and all I do is cheer them (of course cheering plays an equally important role in any game too...or at least that’s what I think!). That adrenaline rush when you are so close to your target, the way you tackle the obstacles, the heart pumping moments when one tiny action could change the course of the game…all these things are seriously easier written than experienced! For someone like me who hasn’t been lucky enough to be an active part of any outdoor sport as such (i still wonder why?), being a spectator to any electrifying game is a privilege indeed! Basketball in school, football and badminton in college, and cricket throughout…these are the games that i have been (and I am) growing up with, like most of us do. Some of my friends (the very few who aren’t interested in any kind of sport) sometimes question about my weird interest in sports (weird, since I’m never seen playing any of them), and honestly, I still don’t have an answer to that. Neither do I have an answer to my own questions about why did I never take the initiative of participating in sports. Why did I never force myself into playing the games that I love to watch?

Ah, those questions keep coming in my mind every now and then, especially after watching some game (I just got back from watching one of the APL league matches :P). But there is one request that I would like to put forward to everyone who reads this (and if possible, even those who don’t): Try to get into any sport that you can. I am not going to blabber about the benefits it has (you have your fitness magazines to fill that space), but all that I want to say is that give yourself a chance to feel those heart pumping moments..the zest, the enthusiasm, the competitiveness, the passion to win, the urge to finish it till the end, the desperation to win the game…believe me friends these are some of those precious things that cannot be replaced by any anything else.

(ouch, did I become Aunt Martha this time? Gosh, I sound like that Granny who sits by the window and advices her grandchildren about various stuff :P) hehe…sorry, but I guess the APL here has that effect…

So, till I meet you all next time, keep smiling and stay fit. With a ‘tata bye bye’ to the winters (Winterji, we’re done bearing u!), a smiling bye to you all as well! :)

Amity School of Communication (ASCO) which is one of the best Media institutes in the country is going to organize first ever International conference on “Changing Paradigms of Media-Landscape in the digital age” on 4th and 5th March 2010. The conference aims to explore and understand the impact of digital technology on traditional media and find out how these technologies are enabling media professionals around the world in their respective areas. In motion a wide range the focus of this International conference is on the usage of digital technology in mass media and its impact on society. The conference addresses the major issues of rise of social media that in turns sets in wide range of questions about the scope of internet and digital media and at the same time raises concerns about the issues of ethical usage of this media.

In the last 50 years the media influence has grown exponentially with the advance of technology, first there was the telegraph, then the radio, the newspaper, magazines, television and now the internet.

We live in a society that depends on information and communication to keep moving in the right direction and do our daily activities like work, entertainment, health care, education, personal relationships, traveling and anything else that we have to do.

A common person in the city usually wakes up checks the tv news or newspaper, goes to work, makes a few phone calls, eats with their family when possible and makes his decisions based on the information that he has either from their co workers, news, tv, friends, family, financial reports, etc.

What we need to be aware is that most of our decisions, beliefs and values are based on what we know for a fact, our assumptions and our own experience. In our work we usually know what we have to do based on our experience and studies, however on our daily lives we rely on the media to get the current news and facts about what is important and what we should be aware of.

We have put our trust on the media as an authority to give us news, entertainment and education. However, the influence of mass media on our kids, teenagers and society is so big that we should know how it really works.

The International conference would welcome the following topics:

- Media in a globalizing world - Digital media Vs Traditional media

- Digital media: Scope & Challenges - Role of Digital media in Brand promotions

- Media & Democracy - Digital Media and Ethics

- Digital media & Governance - Digital media vis-à-vis Laws Regulation

- Digital media as community media - Digital media for corporate Social

- Digital media as a tool of Advertising Responsibility

- Digital Media and Contemporary Cinema

So shines a good deed in a naughty world.” (William Shakespeare)

Students of AUR firmly believe that charity begins at home. Umeed – A drop of hope is an initiative taken by students of Amity University Rajasthan to prove that young minds if united together for a cause, can work wonders. Umeed is a not a profit club rather it is formed by AUR students with a social and community service motive.

The club commenced its first activity by organizing a charitable event on Tuesday and Wednesday in AUR campus wherein students donated clothes, blankets, woolens and other usable commodity for the needy. Team – Umeed distributed these items in orphanages, slums, railways, bus stations and to the Rikshaw walas & street children on Saturday and Sunday. Apart from charity, Umeed also seeks to help and support the student members whenever needed in every way possible.

Students here at AUR believe that each one of us is like a potter; we can shape, design and color the society we live in, the way we want. Our skills can be used to increase the ethical and aesthetical chapters of our society. -
